This opening animation, which I created for Kanal D's 2019 election broadcast, establishes the seriousness of election night through an abstract architectural universe. The stage is designed as a space illuminated by blue and red lights, with geometric volumes of glass and polished metal arranged in depth; the reflective floor and shallow depth of field give the composition a studio feel. The Kanal D logo and the title "Election 2019" are positioned as physical objects within this space.
At the heart of the opening credits is the ballot box: the traditional ballot box is abstracted by being transformed into a glass cylinder on which a map of Turkey and the names of provinces are inscribed as a data layer. This design decision combines the two fundamental elements of election broadcasting—the ballot box and the data—in a single object; the choice of transparent material produces a visual response to the visibility of the process.
Technically, the reflection and refraction behavior of glass and metal surfaces, which requires physical accuracy, was conceptualized in Cinema 4D and rendered with Octane Render; lighting was a crucial stage of the project, as the readability of transparent volumes against a dark background depended on the positioning of light sources. Data layers, typography, composites, and color grading were completed in After Effects.
Election broadcast graphics are the most fast-paced and widely watched form of news graphics: the broadcast lasts for hours, and the sole purpose of graphic language is to visually support the credibility of the information being conveyed. The aim of this package was to establish the weight of the night without resorting to ostentation, using material and lighting effectively.
