The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Applications on Digital Literacy

In the 21st century, the dizzying pace of technological advancement has led to the digitalization of images, making them one of the most effective communication tools of the era. This has fundamentally shaken the dynamics of the concept of 'visual literacy,' expanding its boundaries and necessitating a redefinition of visual literacy from a digital perspective, resulting in the development of the term 'digital visual literacy.' The concept of digital visual literacy, encompassing the intersection of diverse disciplines such as art, design, technology, communication, the internet, media, information technology, and computers, has lacked a common consensus and a general definition until now. This is because the concept's intertwined relationship with 21st-century literacy and new technologies has meant that each new technological development has continuously shaped and transformed the concept.

 

Digital visual literacy fundamentally refers to a 'reader's' ability to create meaning and critically evaluate digital visual images, while the concept of 'writer' is defined as the ability to produce digital visual materials through computer programs. Today, artificial intelligence applications have changed the means and form of digital visual production, and this change has profoundly affected the term 'writer' in the definition of the concept. While writers in traditional and digital technologies need technical knowledge and skills to create a visual product, in artificial intelligence technology, it is sufficient for them to 'prompt' a few words into the application. New technologies transform the traditional form of visual image production, created by 'drawing or shooting,' into a form by first 'creating' it through computer programs and then 'writing' it through artificial intelligence applications.

 

The aim of this book chapter is to trace the effects of new technologies such as artificial intelligence on digital visual production, to identify new elements to be added to the existing core components of the concept of digital visual literacy, and to re-examine the definition of the concept from the perspective of artificial intelligence applications.
