This bumper I created for Kanal D's Ramadan programming conveys the channel's Ramadan message through an animation composed of traditional visual motifs. Lanterns hanging from chains, a silhouette of a mosque and minaret, whirling dervishes, and Karagöz and Hacivat performing behind a curtain are all interconnected by the rhythm of drums, creating a series of scenes that build upon the cultural memory of Ramadan. The animation concludes with a "Happy Ramadan" message, framed in a medallion inspired by calligraphy and illumination.
The decisive decision for the project was the choice of style: instead of a photorealistic three-dimensional language, flat-colored illustrations, textured and aged backgrounds, and decorative motifs were preferred. The visual world of Ramadan is based on a wealth of traditions ranging from shadow puppetry and minaret decorations to illumination and drum culture; using this tradition's own language was chosen as a way to directly connect the channel's message to the viewer's cultural memory. The background, transitioning from turquoise to orange, and the light particles scattered within it, create continuity between scenes while conveying the warm-cool transition of Iftar time.
Scene transitions were created using a layered 2D animation structure: illustration elements were positioned on separate planes and depth was added through camera movement; the whirling dervishes' rotation and the movement of the shadow puppet figures were processed separately as character animations.
Holiday and Ramadan bumpers are a special face that the channel adopts during certain periods of the year. The aim of this study was to set aside the channel's corporate graphic language and create a visual that speaks to the viewer's own cultural repertoire.
